New Perspectives in the Rubber Industry: Summary of the Event in Barrancabermeja

On July 11, 2024, Barrancabermeja became the epicenter of the natural rubber industry in Colombia by hosting the event "Natural Rubber, Opportunity for Sustainable Agriculture and Its Future Trends." This event brought together industry experts, producers, and representatives from key companies to discuss the future and sustainability of natural rubber.

Dra. María Heller, CEO of Valex Group, presented a comprehensive overview on "Trends in Natural Rubber: A Market Analysis for Latin America and North America."

Maria Heller highlighted the sustained growth in demand for natural rubber due to its irreplaceable use in various industries, especially in automotive and manufacturing. She also emphasized the importance of innovation and adaptability in market strategies in the face of global challenges such as changes in environmental regulations and economic volatility.

Dr. Fernando García, Executive Director of the Colombian Rubber Confederation, focused his talk on "Natural Rubber in Colombia: A Profitable Business,"

He emphasized Colombia's competitive advantages as a rubber producer, such as its favorable climate and growing support infrastructure for farmers. García also pointed out the current challenges, including the need to improve production techniques and resource management to maximize profitability.

Dr. Raúl Nizo, Manager of Agroasetes SAS, offered a more technical perspective with his presentation on "Management of Natural Rubber Plantations in the Colombian Orinoquia."

Raúl Nizo described innovative methods to improve plantation efficiency and increase production without compromising environmental sustainability, highlighting the use of advanced technologies and responsible agricultural practices.

Exhibition and Participation

The event featured active participation from 60 rubber producers and 5 influential companies that set up booths, including BASC Oriente, Banco Agrario, Barrancabermeja Chamber of Commerce, UNIPAZ, and Set Products. These booths provided attendees with a valuable opportunity to learn about new products, services, and technologies, as well as facilitate networking among the various industry stakeholders.

The event was broadcast by the TRO channel, which conducted interviews with key figures in the sector in Colombia through various talks. These interviews delved into individual experiences and the expectations of the different links in the rubber production chain, from management to field production.

The event not only highlighted the opportunities of natural rubber as a profitable and sustainable business but also underscored the need for collaboration between producers, academia, industry, and government to foster a more resilient sector prepared for future challenges. Barrancabermeja proved to be an ideal setting to discuss the future of rubber in Colombia, reiterating its role as a key player on the path to more sustainable and economically viable agriculture.
